The Substance
Director Coralie Fargeat's bold critique tackles the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the feared consequences of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into hosting a workout series on TV. This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities with this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly from the perspective of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their recent residence, the filming device – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it looks like protective of her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who accepts a million-dollar gig to visit a festive event on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, prime time, the Channel 4 network
The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has made the local kids on edge. Once Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a cellar, he anticipates the worst. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple set about profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Chastain achieves to depict Tammy Faye with compassion. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel
